My favourite evenings begin without a rush: something good to eat, a little music, and a conversation with its own rhythm. I like places with texture; perfection is less interesting than a little character. I enjoy a considered look and a relaxed manner, especially when neither one does all the talking. I’m drawn to plans with a point of view, but curiosity can always send us elsewhere. I’m attentive without making a ceremony of it. The best atmosphere lets a pause feel natural and a change of subject feel welcome. The best encounters gather detail, warmth, and meaning almost without asking to be noticed.
