Give me a good table, an interesting person, and enough time for the evening to develop without instructions. I bring a calm presence and usually notice more than I say right away. The best atmosphere lets a pause feel natural and a change of subject feel welcome. The best stories are rarely the most polished; I like the details that make them lived in. I enjoy a little teasing and the relief of not taking every sentence seriously. I like a rough direction, a few good options, and room for a story to appear. The best encounters gather detail, warmth, and meaning almost without asking to be noticed.
